Gritty, Adult-Targeting Shows Gain More Traction in the 2025 Emmy Animation Race

The nominees for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning, and five animated series were picked to compete for the coveted prize in September. CBS will air the 77th awards ceremony from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14, hosted by Nate Bargatze.

The nominees included the acclaimed new Adult Swim show Common Side Effects created by Joseph Bennett and Steve Healy, a new episode from the fourth season of Netflix’s anthology sci-fi/fantasy series Love, Death + Robots, titled “Spider Rose,” and “The Dirt Under Your Nails” episode from Arcane‘s acclaimed second season. FOX’s previous years’ Emmy favorites The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers continued to receive praise from the TV Academy’s 24,000 members with two cleverly written episodes  “Bart’s Birthday” and “They Slug Horses, Don’t They?” That’s two for Netflix, two for FOX and one for Adult Swim for the top animation Emmy.
