News Bytes: Voice Reveals for ‘Legend of Aang’ & ‘Invincible,’ Eddie Murphy on ‘Donkey,’ James Cameron Teases ‘Avatar’ Toon’

After the 20h anniversary panel for Avatar: The Last Airbender at San Diego Comic-Con, creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko confirmed to IGN that Steven Yeun will be voicing the aged-up Zuko in upcoming animated feature film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. The star of adult animation hit Invincible was announced as a cast addition back in March.

Yeun was presumed by fans to be reprising his role as Avatar Wan, the first Avatar, from The Legend of Korra. DiMartino and Konietzko would not reveal whether this character will also make an appearance in the new project, which will catch up with older versions of the original Airbender protagonists and is due out on October 9, 2026. Zuko was voiced in the animated series by Dante Basco.

Donkey shrek

While promoting his new film The Pickup, Eddie Murphy spoke to ScreenRant about his work on DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming sequel Shrek 5 and the new spin-off movie for his character, Donkey. Murphy shared that the actors  are still recording voice over for the lovably grumpy ogre’s fifth big screen outing, which is due for release on December 23, 2026, timed to Shrek‘s 25th anniversary. Alongside Murphy, Mike Myers (Shrek) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) are set to reprise their roles, with Zendaya joining the cast as their daughter, Felicia.

Murphy shared that recording for “Donkey” will begin in September. He confirmed the project will be its own spin-off feature film, à la Puss in Boots. “Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story,” he told SR.

Avatar: Fire and Ash [20th Century Studios]

With the official trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash just arrived hot from the render farm, Empire is packing its next issue with info on James Cameron’s upcoming sequel, coming to theaters December 19. In excerpts from an interview shared online, the director reiterated his interest in expanding the world of Avatar to animation. Here’s what he had to say about his conversations with Disney (owner of 20th Century Studios) about the possibilities:

“I said, ‘Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world’. There might even be an animated feature in there — it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.

“A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world. These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar … backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.

“We haven’t done much with that yet. We’re still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I’ve got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.”
