‘Battle’ Pushes ‘Rango’ to No. 2; ‘Mars Needs Moms’ Flops

Animated features faced both success and disappointment at the box office this weekend.

While the top spot wen to the sci-fi action film Battle: Los Angeles, which opened with an estimated $36 million, the No. 2 spot fell to the animated feature Rango. Directed by Gore Verbinski and starring the voice of Johnny Depp, Rango took in an estimated $23.5 million in its second weekend of release. That brings Rango to a domestic total of $68.7 million The film has so far taken in about $16 million overseas for a worldwide total of $85 million.

The news was much less positive for Mars Needs Moms. Produced by Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers using the director’s preferred motion-capture techniques, the film disappointed by opening in fifth place with an estimated $6.8 million. The film had an estimated budget of $150 million, and was not well received by critics.

Mars Needs Moms landed behind Red Riding Hood, which opened at No.3  with $14 million; and The Adjustment Bureau, which took in $11.4 million in its second weekend of release for a $38.4 million domestic total.

Gnomeo and Juliet, meanwhile, continues to do good business. In its fifth weekend of release, the film took made about $3.5 million — good enough for 10th place. The film has so far grossed about $89 million domestic and $44 million overseas for a global total of $133 million.
