Harry Potter Dethroned by Smurfs Overseas

It looks like Peyo’s little blue guys have dethroned Harry Potter from the top of the global box office chart this weekend. Sony’s live-action/CG hybrid movie delivered over $60 million from 10,285 theaters in 44 markets, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 3-D feature was a big hit in China, Russia and the U.K. registering $12.5 million, $4.48 million and $6.57 million respectively. To date, The Smurfs has collected a foreign gross total of $141.1 million since it bowed overseas on July 27.

20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the No. 2 film internationally,  delivering $40.5 million from 6, 238 theaters in 40 territories for a cume of over $75 million. Warner Bros’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 dropped to third place with a weekend tally of $30 million from 61 foreign markets, bringing its overseas gross total to a $857.8 million after five weeks.

Other box office news of interest: Cars 2 was No. 5 with a total of $13.1 million for the weekend and worldwide cume of $476 million. DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 has a global total of $453 million while Fox’s Rio wrapped with a $342.5 million overall.
