‘Tomorrowland’s’ Opening a Bit Soft at $41 Million

Tomorrowland handily topped the Memorial Day weekend box office even as it fell short of expectations for the live-action Disney feature directed by sometime-animator Brad Bird.

Tomorrowland opened with an estimated $41 million gross over the four-day holiday weekend opening period, beating out the holdover comedy Pitch Perfect 2 with an estimated $38 million.

Starring George Clooney, Tomorrowland took in an estimated $27 million in foreign ticket sales, for an opening weekend worldwide total of $59 million. That makes it the 22nd biggest Memorial Day weekend opener of all time.

The horror remake Poltergeist opened with $28 million, while Mad Max: Fury Road earned an estimated $38 million in domestic ticket sales and worldwide has grossed an impressive $212 million to date.

And, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron passed the $200 million mark in China, the $400 million mark domestically and $1.2 billion worldwide. It stall has a way to go to catch up with Furious 7, which is the year’s top-grossing release (so far) with a $1.5 billion worldwide gross.
