An icon of American filmmaking will be celebrated in a new hybrid documentary a la Française. Special Touch Studios and co-producer/broadcast partner Canal+ have debuted the trailer for Spike Lee: The Last King of Brooklyn, which combines filmed interviews, archival footage and animated recreations of Spike Lee’s life.
The project is directed by Dimitri Danvidé, who has previously helmed documentary features on the French hip hop scene (Nouvelle École – La Renaissance du rap français) and the role of music videos in the industry (Les Clippeurs).
Synopsis: A look back at the career of the greatest Black American filmmaker, one who never abandoned his convictions, despite fame and success.
Produced by Sébastien Onomo (Special Touch Studios), Spike Lee: The Last King of Brooklyn is a Canal+ co-production with the participation of Ciné+, with the support of Trace Studios, with the participation of the CNC, with the support of the Sud Provence Alpes-Cote-d’Azur region, in partnership with the CNC, of PROCIREP Société des producteurs, of ANGOA.
The film will premiere in France on April 27 through Canal+.
Special Touch Studios is also celebrating the selection of its animated feature film adaptation of Allah Is Not Obliged for the official competition of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. Special Touch produced with Paul Thiltges Distributions, Need Productions, Lunanime and Yzanakio.
The film is directed by Zaven Najjar, and follows the journey of Birahima, a young Guinean orphan, who recounts with wry irony how he becomes a child soldier while trying to join his aunt in Liberia.
Additionally, the studio’s acclaimed Heart of Darkness adaptation, directed by Rogerio Nunes, will be showcased in a midnight screening at Annecy. The film was produced by Special Touch, Split Studios and Karmatique Imagens.
Set in Rio de Janeiro in the near future, the animated feature follows Marlon, who is tasked with finding and capturing the mysteriously disappeared Captain Kurtz. Marlon will have to carry out his mission in a boat, undertaking a risky journey to the outskirts of Rio.
