Polygon Pictures Tapped to Animate Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

Japanese CG animation studio Polygon Pictures has signed on for the upcoming Marvel animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year. The news was shared by PPI President & CEO Shuzo Shiota  from the studio’s head office in Tokyo, as was logo art for the show.

While no additional details were revealed  in this announcement, the spotlight on Spider-Man: Freshman Year at Comic-Con 2022 offers some clues. The show, which at last estimate from insiders should premiere on Disney+ in late 2024, will rehash the Peter Parker origin story and focus on a young Spidey adjusting to his new powers in what appears to be an alternate universe from the main MCU timeline.

Fans’ attentions were captured by the reveal of a deeper diving rogues’ gallery than has appeared in previous Spider-Man projects. Announced villains include Unicorn, Scorpion, Tarantula, Chameleon, Rhino, Butane,  Speed Demon, Carmela Black and Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus. In the show, Peter Parker will be mentored by the fated Green Goblin, Norman Osborn. It was also announced that Matt Murdock/Daredevil will appear in the film, voiced by Charlie Cox reprising his MCU role.

Announced in November 2021, Spider-Man: Freshman Year is led by head writer/executive producer Jeff Trammell (story editor, Craig of the Creek). A second season, dubbed Sophomore Year, is in development.

Polygon Pictures is known for anime series Ajin: Demi-Human and Knights of Sidonia as well as movies like Blame! and the Godzilla trilogy. The studio has also worked on transpacific projects including Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Resistance, TRon: Uprising, Transformers Prime and Robots in Disguise, Big Hero 6: The Series and Love, Death + Robots “The Very Pulse of the Machine” (Vol. III).
